Save More, Spend Less: Tips To Saving For Retirement
Saving on Vacation
- When going on holiday, consider staying in your home state instead of traveling long distances within the United States or internationally. Often, folks travel thousands of miles to see sights not nearly as impressive as what is next door.
- Consider traveling during off-seasons, when everybody else is at work or college. The staff will be happy to see you and you can save 50% or more on travel costs.
- Avoid large cities and tourist attraction sites. You can save a considerable amount by avoiding these places, where you pay more to eat, drink, sleep, and travel. If you do make a decision to visit a tourist attraction, consider accommodations in a smaller city nearby.
Saving on Purchases
- Refrain from making impulse purchases. Exercise self-discipline.
- Wait for items to go on sale before purchasing them. Ask store associates when they expect to slash prices and keep a record of it. HOWEVER, do not buy things just because they are on sale.
- Use lists when you shop?
- Buy universal or non-name brand products.
- Use a telephone card for long distance or world calls.
- Stop smoking.
- Contribute the maximum yearly to your 401K or to an IRA. If you can make additional payments on your home loan or go for a 15 year mortgage rather than a thirty year mortgage. The savings are huge. Reduce the number of times you eat out. For healthful meals and to save cash, eat at home.
- Watch videos or DVDs at home rather than going to the movie theatre. Pop your own popcorn rather than paying for theater popcorn.
