    <title>Nov 26, Signs of Current Economic Conditions</title>
    <link>http://www.eliteretirementadvice.com/retirement-advice-blog.html#Signs-of-Current-Economic-Conditions</link>
<description>I often overhear people say, how can the economy be as bad as the media or others say it is? They say that people are stll driving cars and the freeways are packed. When they go to Costco, the lines are still long.

Well, markets are made on the margins.

Here&#39;s an example:

Let&#39;s say a public company (a big box retail store like Costco) stock trades at 15 times its expected annual earnings. Last year it earned $2 per share. Now let&#39;s say the store&#39;s earnings were 20 pertcent of the revenues and its had revenues that year were equal to $10 per share.

Now, let&#39;s assume that you (the average shopper) bought an average amount of product or services from that retailer. And each time you went to the store you stood in the check out line for an average amount of time of 7 minutes.

If the economy slows or even contracts (eg. people don&#39;t purchase as much) it may not be perceptible but still devastating to that company&#39;s earnings. So, last year when you went to the store, you stood in line for 7 minutes on average before you checked out. However, now because there are fewer shoppers purchasing fewer things, you stand in line for only 5.9 minutes on average (about 14 less). Without going through the accounting, that amount of reduction in revenue could reduce earnings to $1 or less per share. (Now a $15 stock instead of $30)

Further, if there are even fewer buyers like you so that you stand in line for only 5.5 minutes the company is most likely not making money and even possibly losing money now.

Next time you stand in line at a store wondering remember - Markets are made on margins.</description>
